New York Firearms Safety Course Practice Exam 2026 – Your All-in-One Guide to Master Firearms Safety!

In the event that a firearm fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, the safest course of action is to wait with the firearm pointed in a safe direction and then attempt to clear the firearm. This approach prioritizes safety by ensuring that if the cartridge were to fire unexpectedly, it would not endanger yourself or others.

Keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction minimizes risk while you assess the situation. Waiting a moment allows time for any potential hang-fire, which is when a cartridge ignites after a short delay, to occur without danger. Once you are sure it is safe, you can then clear the firearm properly, ensuring that the action is opened and the cartridge is removed.

Other choices could lead to unsafe practices. For example, looking down the barrel can result in serious injury. Simply trying to pull the trigger again without ensuring the firearm is safe and clear increases risk as well. Opening the action and removing the cartridge should be done but only after ensuring that you are following the correct safety protocols as outlined.
